Most of our buildings are clad in charred timbers. It is an ongoing trade off for us, in the knowledge that whilst there is a carbon price to pay at the beginning, the environmental reward is a material that lasts for a lifetime.
The technique, also known as Yakisugi, removes the bacteria and the moisture pushing the timber into a more inert state.
Our approach is not too extreme; leaving he grains and knots fully visible.
